Missouri

As a land-locked state in the center of the country, Missouri experiences a continental climate. This means that it has hot summers and cold winters. The southern portion of the state, especially near the Bootheel, experiences more rain than the rest of the state. Consequently it is more humid, although temperatures don’t vary much region to region. Missouri is also prone to severe thunderstorms and tornados throughout the year.
Missouri lawn care experts recommend cool season grasses for use in the state. These include bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, and tall and fine fescue grass. Often times, a blend of two or more of these types of grass are also used. Because these grasses are suited for cooler weather, it is recommended that Missouri residents begin planting in August. This gives the grass time to take root and establish itself before winter but after the hottest summer months.

Another important consideration for Missouri residents is the type of soil in their lawn. Some soil types found in Missouri, such as Kickapoo soil which is prominent in the northeast section of the state, are prone to flooding and should therefore be watered less frequently. On the other hand, Menfro soil, which is found in the central and eastern portions of Missouri, is much more well-drained and can tolerate more watering.
