[continue reading...]As one of the southern-most states, Mississippi is incredibly humid year round. Summertime in Mississippi is very hot and muggy while winters tend to be much milder. The vast majority of the state’s precipitation comes from rainfall as the state receives very little, if any, annual snowfall. Because it borders the Gulf of Mexico, Mississippi is prone to many hurricanes, some of which can be devastating. Recently, Hurricane Katrina devastated the region, killing 238 Mississippi residents.
When planning their yards, Mississippi residents need to choose turf types that are able to withstand the state’s humid weather conditions. One of the most popular choices is St. Augustine grass which does extremely well in warm weather states, especially those that are near the coast. Another popular choice is Zoysia grass which is incredibly drought tolerant. This type of grass is also able to withstand heavy traffic making it a good choice for parks or for yards for families with children.
Mississippi lawn care steps vary somewhat by region. The western portion of Mississippi is generally comprised of loess soil while the northeastern part of the state is part of the fertile Alabama Black belt. While both of these soil types are fairly fertile, loess soil is known to erode quite easily. Many Mississippians seed their lawns with ryegrass in the winter to help keep the soil in place and to keep the yard looking green year round.
