Michigan

Michigan is split into two distinct regions, each with its own weather patterns. The southern portion of the state has a warmer climate with long, hot summers and cold winters. In the northern section of the state, Michigan experiences much longer winters with lower temperatures. The summer months can still get warm in this part of the state, but it does not get nearly as hot as in the Lower Peninsula.

Because temperatures can get quite low in both regions and they are both prone to heavy snowfall, sturdy grasses that can withstand cold weather are recommended for all Michigan lawns. This would include bluegrass, fescue, ryegrass, or some combination of these three. These grasses are able to withstand cold temperatures and snowfall. However, they don’t perform as well during hot summers and so regular watering and aeration is necessary during these months.

Snowmold is a major problem in Michigan considering the state’s long winters. This lawn disease is actually a fungus and can kill lawns if not properly treated. If possible, don’t let snow sit on your yard for more than a few days. However, proper fertilization and aeration can also be very helpful in preventing this problem from happening in the first place.
