Maine

Aside from Alaska, Maine is the most northern state in the US. Its location leads to very cold winters and more mild summers. More resilient turf types are necessary to withstand the state’s long winters. The best lawns in Maine are often created with a blend of several types of cool weather grasses like bluegrass, fine fescue, and ryegrasses. By mixing several types of grass, it’s easier to maximize to positive attributes of each variety, while downplaying their negative aspects.

One of the most popular blends available in Maine consists of a blend between Kentucky bluegrass and fine fescue. Kentucky bluegrass is used primarily for its vibrant green color and is easy to grow in many different soil types. It is also able to withstand Maine’s cold winters. Adding fine fescue allows the grass to thrive in heavily shaded areas and also adds to the lawns ability to withstand cold.

The main concern of Maine lawn care is making sure that the lawn receives proper watering. Soil in Maine tends to be rocky and dry, so irrigation is necessary for most residents. This combined with regular fertilization and aeration can make for a beautiful lawn.
