    You’re walking across your lush lawn, resplendent in flowering dogwoods, budding hydrangeas, and well-defined edges when you notice some unusual green leaves mixed in with your planted lawn covering. Since you thought you had lawn weeds and pest under control, this discovery is a bit unsettling. As you begin taking a closer look, the lawn weeds and pest free yard you believed you had reveals several more surprises-leaf and plant damage caused by billbugs, mole crickets, chinch bugs, and other occurrences of chickweed and nimblewill. Hmmm…what can you do to destroy, defend or diffuse these lawn weeds and pest? Is there a way to rejuvenate, revamp, and, if necessary, re-invent your yard? Don’t despair! With a little bit of work, you can soon have that healthy yard back-and better than ever.

     

    Common Lawn Weeds:

     

    To help rid your lawn of unwanted plants, you must first know how to identify them. Some of the more prevalent lawn weeds are annual barnyard grass, crab grass, purslane, prostrate knotwood, annual and perennial chickweed, goose grass, dandelions, common and buckhorn plantain, and nimblewill. While many see lawn weeds as merely something to be defeated, some gardening and lawn care professionals see lawn weeds are a way to learn what is going on beneath the soil.

     

    Common Lawn Weeds

    What They Indicate

    Barnyard grass Low in calcium, phosphorus, humus and bacteria; high in potassium, magnesium, and sulfur
    Chickweed Low calcium and phosphorus; high in nitrogen, potassium, magnesium and salt
    Crab grass Low in calcium and bacteria with high potassium, much soil compaction
    Dandelions Low in calcium and pH; high in potassium
    Goose grass Low calcium and phosphorus; high potassium, magnesium and salt
    Nimblewill Low in calcium and humus; high magnesium; poor drainage; anaerobic
    Perennial Knotweed Low in calcium, phosphorus, humus, pH; high potassium, magnesium and organic matter
    Plantain High in calcium, potassium, phosphorus; poor drainage, anaerobic, acidic
    Purslane Low in calcium, nitrogen, phosphorus, humus and moisture; high in potassium and sodium

     

    Learning more about lawn weeds and being able to identify common lawn pest, you will soon be on your way to a healthy yard. While most of us are familiar with black ants, beetles, and grubs, additional lawn pest include billbugs, the “C” shaped, white larvae of the weevil that feed on stems, crowns and roots; mole crickets which are prevalent in sandy soil; white grubs of the beetle family that eat the blades and roots; armyworms which feed on grass blades; and, chinch bugs which feast on sap sucked from the grass stems. Although there are a variety of lawn weeds and pest controls available on the market, everyone benefits when you opt for natural controls. These approaches are divided into 4 groups:

     

    1. Cultural changes- focusing on grass selection and soil improvements
    2. Physical solutions- uses manual labor and a barrier-like structure
    3. Biological controls- using helpful organisms to take over the lawn weeds and pest
    4. Botanical controls- by applying sprays and dust and should be used as a last resort. Some common choices are boric acid, neem, citrus oils, compost tea, copper, sulfur, and herbs such as garlic or rosemary oil.

     

    As you learn about lawn weeds and pest, you will begin to see than as easily read signs that make it easy to have the yard you have always wanted. By paying attention, and making the necessary changes, you will prevail in the fight against lawn weeds and pest.
