Lawn Care Equipment

Buzz. Whir. Whack. Hack. Hum. These are the definitely not the sounds of silence. They are, however, some of the sounds associated with lawn care equipment. When it comes to lawn care equipment, there are many items to consider—some are big items like garden tractors or zero turn radius riders and others are smaller like pruning shears or manual aerators. So, how do you decide what types of lawn care equipment is right for you? Consider the answers to these questions.

    1. How big is your yard?
    2. How much money are you able (or willing) to spend on lawn care equipment?
    3. How much time do you have/want to spend in your yard?
    4. Who will be doing the majority of the work?
    5. Are you going to be able to handle the lawn care equipment on your own?

Once you have the answers to these questions, you are ready to begin selecting the lawn care equipment for your needs. One of the most recognizable items in lawn care equipment is the lawn mower. Invented by Edwin Budding in 1830, the reel mower is one of the oldest forms of mechanical lawn care equipment. Today there are a variety of mowers to choose from—garden tractors with 54” wide mowing decks, cruise control, and 4 wheel drive; lawn tractors with smaller deck sizes that can run snow throwers or push/pull dethatchers and carts; standard riding mowers ranging from residential to commercial grade and easy to use zero turn radius mowers. Other types of lawn care equipment for yard maintenance are the walk behind mower (available in self-propelled or push), and the reel mower. While a mower is perhaps one of the larger pieces of lawn care equipment you will need, there are many other tools you would do well to have. Some of these are the tools used to maintain a weed-free lawn and garden. While there are many to choose from, here are some that no garden shed should be without.

    • The fishtail or dandelion weeder- used for removing a weed’s deep taproots
    • Trowels- great for weeding or plugging, especially if you live in the South
    • Grub/”grape” hoes- similar in appearance to a pickaxe; it is ideal for lawn renovations.
    • Forks-this piece of lawn care equipment is one of the most versatile tools you can own. The lawn fork is used for breaking up dirt clods, unearthing roots, turning and working the soil, spreading compost and manure and even aerating a compost pile.
    • Broadcast spreader- assist with applying fertilizer and soil amendments
    • Tarps- perhaps one of the most overlooked forms of lawn care equipment, a lightweight tarp can be used for moving sod, transplanting tress, shrubbery, etc.., collecting leaves and a variety of other lawn care jobs.

While these items are not the only pieces of lawn care equipment needed to keep your yard looking fantastic, they will help. As you begin using the tools your lawn will look neater and healthier. Before you know it, everyone will think you hired a pro!
