Fall Planting for Spring Bulbs

Plant spring blooming bulbs in the fall for beautiful garden displays.  Most hardy bulbs need a cooling period, so they should be planted in the ground before the ground freezes solid or, in areas where the ground does not freeze (the South, primarily), the bulbs need to be chilled.  Here are some pointers for planting [...]

Landscaping and Gardening

Playing group sports, backyard picnics, sensational shrubs and gorgeous flower gardens—these are all components to consider in planning your lawn’s landscaping and gardening blueprint. Your lawn needs to be designed with many activities and concerns factored in. These landscaping and gardening questions should include the following:

    1. How large is your lawn? Your landscaping and gardening options are dictated by how much room you have to enhance.
    2. What are the shapes in your lawn? Are all your flower gardens and landscaping designs nothing more than a series of squares and rectangles?
    3. What type of drainage system is used? An optimum situation in landscaping and gardening encourages water absorption.
    4. Do you have a preference in types of edge treatments?
    5. What kind of grass is recommended for your region as well as for the activities you wish to pursue?
    6. What kind of view do you want when your landscaping and gardening project is completed? As the seasons change, you want your lawn to be aesthetically appealing from your windows and from the street.
    7. How much time and money do you have to invest in your landscaping and gardening project? Having a yard that is a source of pride and beauty takes a minimum of $250 to $350 per year.

Once you have given careful consideration to these questions, you are ready to create a plan for landscaping and gardening. Begin by using tracing paper or a photocopy of your lawn (an aerial shot is great, and may be found using Google earth.) to designate areas of your lawn for specific needs—picnic area, children’s play area, flower gardens, etc.. As part of the design plan be sure to consider watering options such as sprinklers, as well as additional features like paths, privacy, and preventing water runoff on sloped areas by building a retaining wall.

As you design your landscaping and gardening plan, you will be amazed at the possibilities your yard contains. So, take your time and plan, prepare and pursue your yard’s full potential.
