Lawn Care and Maintenance
Imagine….you are sitting on your back deck sipping a tall glass of ice cold, gently sweetened strawberry lemonade. The flowers are swaying gently in the summer breeze and the scent of freshly mowed grass is wafting across the yard as sunlight and shadows are flittering through the trees. You sigh in contentment….Oops! Reality check! Before you can enjoy that refreshing cold drink and idyllic setting, there are a number of lawn care and maintenance responsibilities to be taken care of. These chores range from spreading compost and fertilizer to mowing and weeding. No matter the time of year, efficient lawn care and maintenance are a part of life. Springtime lawn care and maintenance can vary depending on where you live; however, there are some things that remain the same whether you live in a warm or cool. These standard spring lawn care and maintenance jobs are:
- Applying helpful compost tea
- Mowing with low blade
- Pulling weeds by hand or spot spraying
- Dethatching and aerating
- Applying helpful nematodes (micro-organisms in the soil that can be either helpful or harmful), as needed, for grub control.
These jobs are an important part of setting the tone for the rest of the year, so be sure to take your time. With summer’s heat comes everyone’s favorite lawn care and maintenance job-regular lawn mowing! With lawn mowing comes the decision of what type of mower to use-a reel mower, a rotary mower, a riding mower or a walk behind; as well as deciding whether to use a gas, electric, battery, or manual powered. Additional summer lawn care and maintenance jobs include paying attention to how often and how much you water, monitoring the insects (some good, some bad), attentive weed control, watching for lawn disease, and applying a calcium rich fertilizer. As summer gently slips into fall, your lawn care and maintenance needs change. And, while weekly mowing may not be a part of your routine, there are other responsibilities to implement. Once again your region dictates some of the specifics; however, there are lawn care and maintenance jobs that should be on your fall “To Do” list.
- Lowering your lawn mower blades as this is often a time of excessive growth
- Applying compost tea-think of it as putting your lawn to bed
- Removing all leaves and debris, then adding a layer of compost to enrich your soil’s components over the winter
About the time you are ready to kick back, relax and take break from lawn care and maintenance, winter arrives and there are just a few basic things to include.
- If you live in a cool region, be sure not to be too hard on the ground (parking vehicles, boats, etc…)-even if it is covered by sparkling snow
- In you live in the warm regions it is necessary to continue watering, so your spring will have the perky freshness everyone can’t wait to enjoy.
Year round lawn care and maintenance necessary, if you are desirous of having a yard that the whole neighborhood is talking about; besides think how much better that ice cold lemonade will taste when you look out at beautifully maintained and manicured yard.
