Choosing a turf type in Kentucky may seem like a no-brainer. It is true that Kentucky bluegrass is an excellent option for many parts of the state. This grass can withstand the state’s cool winters, when temperatures often hover around freezing. Although it is less suited for warm temperatures, Kentucky’s heavy summer rainfall helps the grass stay green and healthy year round.
Kentucky bluegrass is best suited for the eastern portion of the state. Moving westward, Kentucky temperatures get significantly warmer and the performance of Kentucky bluegrass decreases significantly. Residents in this area should consider planting a blend of Kentucky bluegrass and fine fescue (which is better suited for warm weather). By blending the two, the turf becomes significantly more resistant to droughts as well as cold weather and shade. Zoysia grass, which is extremely tolerant of warm weather, is another option for western Kentuckians.
Another option for Kentucky lawn care is combining bluegrass with perennial ryegrass. Ryegrass on its own is not particularly desirable because it is a tough turf that forms unsightly clumps. However, by combining it with bluegrass, it is possible to achieve a beautiful green lawn that is more durable than Kentucky bluegrass alone.
