Because of the sometimes violent weather in the state, residents need to choose a durable grass type for their yard. Kentucky bluegrass is a popular choice for yards, and is one of the more resilient species of grass available. However, bluegrass does have a low tolerance for drought and Illinois residents should plan on regular watering during drier months.
Another type of grass recommended by Illinois lawn care is ryegrass. Both perennial and annual ryegrass do well in colder climates and can withstand heavy rains and snow. However, these types of grass are not suitable for pastures or farmland because they contain toxins that can be harmful to grazing animals.
One area of concern for many Illinois residents is snowmold. This lawn disease occurs when snow sits on the lawn for long periods of time, causing the grass underneath to get sick. To prevent this, Illinois lawn care often includes regular fertilization and the use of fungicides such as benomyl.
