Florida

Surrounded by the ocean on three sides, Florida’s weather is largely tropical. Florida’s weather is warm year-round, although the summer months can get especially hot. Rainfall also occurs in large amounts during the spring and summer months creating a humid, muggy climate. Florida also experiences more extreme weather, and both tornados and hurricanes are common yearly occurrences.

With such extreme weather conditions, Florida residents need to think carefully about their lawn turf selections. One of the most popular grasses for residents’ lawns in Florida is the St. Augustine grass, which is able to withstand the state’s weather conditions and many variations of weeds. It is important that this variety of grass receives adequate moisture, but that is rarely a problem as the state receives substantial rainfall year round.

One of the biggest threats to St. Augustine grass in Florida is the chinch bug. These insects feed on plant juices and one of their favorite foods is St. Augustine grass. They can cause serious damage to lawns if not dealt with properly. However, Florida lawn care professionals are usually able to manage these insects very effectively.
