Types of Grass

Once you have had your soil tested, and then prepped it by adding amendments, leveling, and more, you’re finally ready to begin grass seed selection. Just a few minutes into your research, and you will discover that there are many types of grass, each with their own unique characteristics and preferences. No longer is grass seen as mere lawn covering; rather, each year there are millions of dollars spent on research and development of new types of grass. Of special interest to those who work in grass research and development is finding types of grass that are drought tolerant, pest and disease resistant, and searching for grass that will not grow as tall. Consequently, selecting grass is much more difficult today than it was in years gone by.

Types of Grass Can Be Broken Down Into 3 Main Categories:

    • Cool Season Grasses, which do best in the top half of the US and Canada.
    • Warm Season Grasses, which excel in the lower 1/3 of the United States.
    • Transition Grasses, which includes the middle of the US encompassing Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina, West Virginia, Virginia, Oklahoma and parts of Arizona, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Georgia, Alabama, Colorado, Utah, Montana, New Mexico , Texas and California.

Becoming familiar with the types of grass which do best in your region will help you maintain a yard you can be pleased with.

Popular Types of Grass for Homeowners in the Cool Season Zones are:

    • Kentucky Bluegrass – requires high maintenance
    • Perennial Rye Grass – great for erosion prevention
    • Fescues – drought resistant, shade tolerant and evergreen nature
    • Fairway Wheatgrass – tolerated drought, grows well without fertilizer

Warm Season Types of Grass Include:

    • Bermuda Grass -Tolerates heat, foot traffic and grows quickly
    • Bahia Grass – drought tolerant, disease and insect resistant
    • Centipede – requires little mowing, but cannot handle excessive foot traffic
    • Zoysia – relatively disease and pest resistant, keeps weeds to a minimum
    • St. Augustine – much maintenance required
    • Carpet Grass – low maintenance; shade and foot traffic tolerant

Types of Grass in the Transitional Region Include:

    • Buffalo Grass -needs little water and no extra nitrogen
    • Little Bluestem- low maintenance, grows quickly

Once you determine what type of grass will work best for where you live, it is only a matter of time before your lawn can look its best.
