    Building a Lawn

Since the days of George Washington, Americans have spent hours each year cultivating the perfect lawn. Matter of fact, Thomas Jefferson brought ideas used in England and France landscaping designs back to America during the 1780’s. In early days building a lawn and maintaining its beauty was done with a scythe and hard physical labor. Today, building a lawn has a few more tools and involves some additional steps, but the verdant green lawns, gorgeous gardens, and manicured shrubbery are worth it.

    Steps in Building a Lawn:

As you begin building the lawn you have always wanted, there are a number of steps to follow to ensure your lawn is all it can be.

    1. Decide the functionality of your lawn—make a list of activities you want your yard to be able to support (visiting, storing firewood/toys, backyard sports, bird watching, outdoor entertaining, etc…) and then create a blue print with provisions for those features included

    2. In building a lawn, be sure to keep water conservation methods in mind.
    3. Have a soil test done to establish your soil’s condition. These results will aid you in selecting fertilizer types, the amount of compost, etc… You will also need to determine your soil’s type (sandy, clay …) and check for compaction.
    4. In building a lawn there are 4 choices in attaining a green yard—seeding, sprigs, sod and plugs.
    5. As you begin deciding how to plant your lawn, it is necessary to settle on what types of grass to plant. The US is divided into 3 regions (Cool season, Warm season and Transitional areas) and each of them has specific types of grass that excel in them.

Building a Lawn in 5 Steps:

    1. Remove the existing ground cover. This is best done after a heavy rain or deep watering, then using a power edger to cut the lawn and a hoe to remove the sections.
    2. Use a landscaping rake to smooth the ground, and then add at least 3 inches of topsoil.
    3. Make any adjustments to the soil-compost, fertilizer, nutrients, etc…
    4. Rake and smooth the area(s) to be planted.
    5. Plant your lawn with your chosen method.

Once your lawn has been planted keep foot traffic to a minimum and be sure to water at least 4 times a day to encourage its growth. You won’t need to mow your lawn until the grass is at least 4 inches tall and then be sure to only cut ½ to ¾ of an inch.

Building a lawn takes time and energy, but having a lush yard is worth it. You will soon be able to smile with pride at a job well done!
