Although Minnesota experiences temperature extremes with very hot summers and very cold winters, it is a fairly dry climate with little humidity. This makes the temperature variations a bit more bearable. In addition to temperature extremes, Minnesota is also subject to more severe weather including blizzards, thunderstorms, tornados and hail. Minnesota makes up for its harsh weather with its beautiful wildlife life, with stunning mountains including the Iron Mountain Range and lots of rivers and lakes. The best grasses for Minnesota are generally cool weather grasses like Kentucky bluegrass, ryegrass, and tall fescue. These grasses are able to withstand the state’s very cold temperatures and winter snowfall. However, these grasses do not perform as well under extremely hot conditions, and extra watering and fertilization is an important aspect of Minnesota lawn care during the summer months. Luckily, the state’s soil is composed of primarily loamy soil which retains water excellently helping the keep Minnesota grass looking healthy year round.
