For such a small state, Maryland experiences a fairly varied climate. The eastern part of the state is much warmer than the western half, although the state as a whole experiences high levels of precipitation year round. This of course means that Maryland lawn care experts recommend different types of grass depending on your location within the state. For the most part, cool season grasses are recommended for Maryland considering that the state does get fairly cold in the winter months. Some of the most popular varieties include the tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, and perennial ryegrass. All of these grasses are able to withstand fairly cold temperatures. Of the three, tall fescue is also the most tolerant to warmer temperatures. However, Kentucky bluegrass is known for its excellent appearance and texture. Many Maryland lawn care experts recommend blending one or more of the cool season grasses to achieve a superior turf type. Fescue and bluegrass is a popular combination, although ryegrass also blends well with the two. Understanding the benefits and drawbacks of each of the types can help you decide what specific blend will work best for your needs.
