Alabama experiences what is often called a ‘subtropical climate.’ Bordered on the south by the Gulf of Mexico, Alabama experiences high humidity and precipitation year-round. Summers are hot and winters are mild, making Alabama best suited for warm weather types of grass. These include variations of St. Augustine grass and Bermuda grass. Another option for Alabama lawns is Zoysia grass, although this variety typically does much better in drier climates.
All of the mentioned grasses are able to thrive well in Alabama’s warm and humid climate. However, these grasses are not very tolerant of lower temperatures and the occasional cold snap during the wintertime can be harmful to the lawn. The dreaded “brown spot” is a lawn care problem that many Alabama residents experience. Alabama lawn care professionals recommend that the shade over the lawn be reduced and fertilizers containing nitrogen be used minimally in order to prevent these bothersome spots from appearing.
